To help new teachers prioritize their responsibilities, a mentor teacher within the Columbus Public School District in Columbus, Ohio, developed a “New Science Teacher” checklist. The checklist was designed for participants of Columbus’s Peer Assistance and Review (PAR), a program that provides support for teachers new to the district. The month-by-month checklist helps new science teachers anticipate upcoming events, such as science fairs and field trips, and plan accordingly. Here the authors expand upon the checklist and address specific challenges faced by new science teachers.
