This column shows how to use discrepant events to confront misconceptions. Students may hold onto the misconception that all liquids naturally combine when put into the same container (e.g., adding food coloring to water and adding chocolate syrup to
milk). This activity aims to show students a concrete example of how liquids of different densities don’t necessarily combine when placed in the same container.
Through this discrepant event, students will meet the Next Generation Science Standards by analyzing and interpreting data, using mathematics and computational
thinking, and developing an argument from evidence.
