Freebies for Science and STEM Teachers: Grades K–12

Cleveland Clinic’s Connected Career Rounds Video Lessons

The Cleveland Clinic Center for Youth and College Education’s entire library of 11 Connected Career Rounds sessions—one-hour videos about careers in healthcare—from this school year is now available on-demand for free to all students and educators, as well as nine sessions from prior years. In these lessons, Cleveland Clinic caregivers walk through care scenarios and describe their professional roles, as well as how they prepared for their careers. The Connected Career Rounds team provides additional information about the depicted careers such as expected income, 10-year expected job growth, education requirements, and local education programs.

Students and school professionals can access the videos by visiting the website and selecting “log in as a guest” in the bottom left corner. Teachers and students can also access links to relevant educational programs and career resources, video features on in-demand jobs at Cleveland Clinic, and caregiver testimonials from healthcare professionals.

Cetacean Connections: Curriculum for the Middle Level

Produced jointly by the ocean conservation organization FutureSwell and National Geographic, Cetacean Connections is a three-day hybrid learning curriculum that immerses learners in grades 5–8 in ocean exploration and marine mammal research. Through the curriculum’s video-based lessons and accompanying worksheets, students follow a team of National Geographic Explorers aboard the E/V Nautilus to study dolphins in Hawaii, learning about what it takes to be an ocean explorer along the way. Students collect background information on a marine mammal species (Day One: Adopt a Marine Mammal); hone observation skills and ask scientific questions (Day Two: Explorer Log); and model how scientists and explorers log behavioral data in wildlife (Day Three: Ethogram Data Collection). The curriculum can be completed in either in-person or remote-learning settings and includes supporting materials such as an instructor’s guide, student worksheets, and a video interview with a marine mammal scientist.

National Anti-Vivisection Society’s Humane Education Lesson Plans to Revamp Life Science Classes

NAVS has developed Animal Use in Science: Exploring the 3Rs, which provides high school teachers with lesson plans, activities, and assessments that introduce the 3Rs Principles: Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement of the use of animals in product testing and research. The curriculum features eight NGSS-compliant comprehensive lesson plans. This curriculum is designed to cultivate critical thinking and ethical responsibility in students, while achieving excellence in science education.

Each module requires between 75–120 minutes of classroom time. The modules cover a range of topics, including experimental design, cell biology, and environmental issues. In addition, a series of interactive video modules can be used to augment the material covered in the lesson plans. (Free registration is required to obtain the curriculum.)

Arbor Day Foundation’s Tree Campus K–12 Program

Connect your students to nature through trees! Tree Campus K–12 inspires collaboration among schools, students, and communities to promote experiences with trees as a learning tool, both inside and outside the classroom. The program encourages schools and educators to create opportunities for students to interact with trees by offering resources as well as a framework for becoming recognized and celebrating their efforts with their community. Schools must achieve four goals:

•    Maintain a team with representation from staff, students, and community dedicated to achieving Tree Campus K–12 recognition.
•    Conduct activities that connect students to trees and their global benefits, inside or outside of the classroom.
•    Engage students in a project that brings the school’s tree spirit to the community.
•    Hold a celebration of trees within the school or the community.

As a Tree Campus, you’ll join a network of other schools and facilities committed to a healthier future, so you can share ideas and opportunities.

Meet the Magnets: A Virtual Field Trip to the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory

On May 6, Sesame Workshop and Discovery Education will hold a Virtual Field Trip to the U.S. National Science Foundation National High Magnetic Field Laboratory. K–5 students will discover the powerful science of magnets, and they will see how science is all around us. Students will be able to ask questions of the scientists and technicians who build, maintain, and use all different magnets that impact our daily lives. The virtual field trip is free, and advance registration is required.

Fourth Annual International Mission to Mars Engineering Design Competition

The Mars Society will offer a virtual program for high school students ages 13–19 worldwide who are passionate about space, science, and engineering! This program takes place June 9–July 18, offering students a chance to tackle real-world challenges in Mars exploration. Participants will design a Mars surface mission lasting up to 18 months, considering the following:

• Habitats and life support systems;
• Scientific instruments and research goals;
• Power and sustainability solutions;
• Rovers, vehicles, and mobility strategies; and
• Crew composition and mission operations.

Students will engage in lectures led by top scientists and engineers from NASA, the aerospace industry, and academia. They will gain invaluable experience in STEM problem solving, teamwork, and critical thinking. Apply by May 15.
